Akwastop™ Hydrophilic Rubber Waterstop
Product Description
Akwastop is a hydrophilic rubber waterstop that swells upon contact with water to prevent water infiltration through cast-in-place concrete construction joints subjected to continuous or intermittent hydrostatic pressure. It is easy to install and functionally replaces conventional passive PVC dumbbell waterstops. Akwastop is also ideal for industrial projects that may require an elevated level of chemical compatibility for long term performance.
The key to Akwastop’s effectiveness is its
300% swelling capacity when wetted and its plasticity to contour the
surrounding surface. The hydrophilic agent is distributed throughout
the product, not just limited to certain sections like some other
hydrophilic waterstops, to provide consistent sealing performance along
the entire installation. Akwastop’s exceptional plasticity allows the
product to fill small voids and cracks in the concrete directly around
it.
Applications include poured-in-place
concrete construction joints, new-to-existing concrete construction,
and around mechanical and structural penetrations through the concrete.
Akwastop has been successfully tested to withstand 165 feet (50 m) of
hydrostatic pressure. Additionally, Akwastop has excellent chemical
resistance to hydrocarbons, salts, and many organic acids and bases.
Because of its excellent chemical resistance it is used in the concrete
joints of secondary containment structures. Akwastop is designed for
concrete 8” (200mm) thick or greater and requires a minimum of 3” (75
mm) of concrete coverage on all sides. Akwastop is not a self-adhering
product; it is secured into place with AS-100 Adhesive. Additionally,
on extremely rough surfaces Akwaswell swelling paste can be installed
first, filling pockets and depressions, and duel service as an adhesive
for the Akwastop gasket.
Akwastop is produced in a rectangle
cross-sectional shape measuring 0.75” x 0.375” (20mm x 10mm) in roll
lengths of 33 feet (10 m). It is easy to install and does not require
the workmanship rigors of welding the joints or hog wire tying the
product into position associated with traditional PVC dumbbell type
waterstops. Simply adhere Akwastop to the concrete with AS-100 Adhesive
and then pour the concrete. Coils ends are butted together, not welded,
to form a continuous waterstop.
Akwastop enhances the performance of a
sound external waterproofing system, by sealing the areas of highest
probability of water intrusion through the concrete, and should
therefore be implemented as part of the waterproofing design.
Limitations
Akwastop is not an expansion joint material and should not be used as such. A traditional expansion joint material must be used in expansion or any moving joint. A minimum of 3” (75 mm) of concrete cover must separate Akwastop from the face of the concrete.
